I am currently studying this poem in school and whilst reading it I feel rather nostalgic as it reminds of all the fun, care-free things I used to do when I was younger...unfortunately as I am now in IB I have no time for such things anymore....time flies that is why every moment is precious and must be treasured... :)

and at the heart of this lives a veiled truth:

that the other is the same as the I. That if we treat others poorly, we are just treating ourselves exactly the same way. No division in other words.

live the truth, and the joy of the cosmos will flow through your life. Shining like a gleaming torch for others to see.

Dear ElleMay,

I appreciate your appreciation of my WATERMELON PICKLE poem. I've received many such comments over the years.

However, please correct the disturbing typo in your blogged reprint of the poem. Your line reads "Thick imperial slices."
The poem's actual line is "Thick, pink, imperial slices"
Extremely important to the rhythm and the imagery.

Thanks for your prompt correction.

This is a wonderful story for this time of year. I view Widow Greatheart’s acts, saintly as they are, as part of her mundane day-to-day existence. In this way, the story reminded me of Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral”. Greatheart’s bewilderment regarding the events that occurred, are cousin to “Bud’s” own (temporary) transcendence. Both characters will mostly likely resume their “normal” lives the following day.

Thank you for posting the story.

I am so happy to read this site. I am truly concerned about this election, and about our country. Just this evening I received the most vile email from a pastor who just left an event where he was on the podium with Senator McCain and Governor Palin. He believes the pair are "annointed by God" and "destined to lead", and he went on to call all of us who are voting for Obama "God Haters." This sort of fanaticism and discrimination clothed in a rigid self-righteousness terrifies me. We know what happens when fundamentalist religious belief is tied to public policy, and its not good. The inferences is that Obama is somehow a God-hater too! I truly hope and pray that those who are biased against Obama because of his mixed ethnic heritage, or who believe he is a terrorist because of his name (insane), or consider him ungodly because he does not flaunt his religious views, will get past these myopic views and look to what is best for the entire country.

Palin's campaign reminds me of what happened to America when they voted for Prohibition, what is happening in CA. (Vote NO on 4,6,7,8,9,10) where a few wealthy people are trying to undermine democracy, the equal protection clause, the rights of ordinary people.

As an attorney, I have never been so disturbed as by Palin's (and by association, McCain's) lack of understanding of the Constitution, as a woman, by the lack of empathy for women who have been raped or suffered incest, by a grandmother who wants her grandbabies to grow up in a carrying, environmentally healthy environment.

Let's hope young people see through this and vote, and that people of all faiths vote for the Constitution and separation of church and state.
